peer reviews

Film #3 Peer Reviews What specific elements of the film opening did you like? Was there anything that left you confused? (be specific) What suggestions do you have for changes? I liked the camera angle from the bears POV. I also like the story telling. Why does this not have an Oscar yet? Talk louder because some scenes are too quiet. The specific elements of the film that I liked was the use of costume and the props. Nothing left me confused I recommend that they should add a few transitions throughout the film and some credits at the end. I thought the concept was very creative!! You can tell that the members put a lot of thought into their film opening -- between the costumes, camera shots, and storyline. I liked contrast from the camera shots coming from the bear v. a normal camera. Great job! The scene where the girl was climbing a tree was ki...

Editing week 2

Image
We edited for the second week this past week. We edited in a title card. We matched up the music so that an intense part of the music played at the same time words showed up. We kept the music playing through out and lowered in when lines were spoken. We added in simple fade in and fade out transitions as we didn't want it to distract it from the story too much. We also ended up adding a voice over for a scream we had at the end of the film.

Editing week 1

Image
This week Chelsey and I began to edit our film opener. We started by editing out excess film at the beginning and ends of the clips. They were mostly us setting up the camera and saying cut. In the first photo below we had to make sure it lined up with the next shot we were planning to film. In the second photo we had to make sure we cut it at the right time so that you couldn't see Chelsey laughing in the background. The last photo was probably the most intricate thing to film and edit. There were multiple shots and point of views that went into that one scene. I think it ended up turning out really cool so the time and effort was worth it.

Continuing to film (week 2)

Image
We finished up filming this weekend. The last two scenes were very easy to film. It only took about an hour. We then went through all the clips we had and decided which ones we liked. We ended up having to reshoot one scene because my finger was in the shot. We then cut out the beginning and end of each clip because the beginnings and ends were of us setting up of saying something not pertaining to the shot. We then put them together in one cohesive clip. We now have to go back and add sounds and sound effects.

Beginning to Film

Image
Our group began filming this week. We jumped right into filming once we got to the location. The hardest part was finding a good angle that would encompass the shot we wanted. Once we found that angle it was difficult to have the camera be steady. We had to balance multiple things under our camera. Once we started trying to film we found that it was hard for both of us to be in a scene together without laughing or smiling. The only shot we had planned to shoot together that needed to be serious was the first one. We simply made it so I was out of frame and we filmed it easy enough after. We found the best method of filming was to shoot a single scene multiple times then choose which one we liked best. We got a little more than half done and plan to finish shooting the rest later this week. Until then we want to start finalizing cuts we're going to use and determine if anything already filmed needs to be reshot.

Preparing to film

Chelsey and I decided we would play the three characters in our film. We would just change our costumes. We've already gone over props to make sure we already have or can readily get the props needed for our film which include: handcuffs, teddy bear, ipad, and mustache. We're going to film in an empty classroom. We will film for a few hours on two Fridays. We've already written a script and will film with an Ipad and phone.

Initial story board

Image
I drew the story board while Chelsey and I talked about our film. We both had a ton of input on camera shots and angels, sounds, and transitions for our film. It is a flashback film.

I want to take care that the audio I take is clear. I want to make sure my camera shots are stable and not shaky.

Film opening research #2- The babysitter

 1.  How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?  3 2.What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?  We see the main character avoiding getting a dot. It immediately conveys the fact that he is “wimpy”. 3.What connotations do the images carry?  It shows us he is wimpy because he is running away from a shot as a high school student. It’s supposed to also be funny. 4. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?  The nurse is making fun of him for it, which garters a laugh from the audience. The cutest childish background emphasizes how    childish the main character is being. He also gets hit with a ball by another character just after the name of the film is shown. 5.How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?  We know based on the movie description that the main character will have to fight something. Based on the intro, we are left wondering how this “wimpy” kid ...

Film Opening Research #1 - A Haunted House

 1.   How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?  7 2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?  The description of the “found film” is written in type writer/ script print. Then it begins right off the bat with the recordings to keep with the documentary type feel of the movie. 3. What connotations do the images carry?  The images carry a mocked seriousness, which illustrates the film well because it is a parody. 4.  How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?  You pick up on the found footage feel of it through: the font used in the beginning, the description of the events, and how the main character is talking to himself in the beginning of the movie. 5.How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?  Other than the brief description we got that describes the film as “found footage”, we’re not really sure what we’re watching. In the beginning, it’s just a man and ...

Semester Exam - Film Analyses of Black Mirror (season 3, episode 4, San Junipero)

Midterm exam Black Mirror, San Junipero had an abundance of different camera shots, angels, and sounding decisions that were essential to the mood and meaning. How the characters were portrayed and came together were highly dependent on the angels they were shown in, the music playing in the background as they were on screen and the setting of which they were in. Beginning with camera shots and angles, in the span of about 4 minutes there were over 10 different camera shots. To start us off with an establishing shot of the beach and city lights. It creates a sense of serenity and peacefulness. A pan shot of a car then follows and then we are transitioned to Yorkie walking along the sidewalk and we are given a close up shot of her. This helps us get introduced to the character. We are also introduced to two more characters, Kelly and Wes. A panning shot is used to show that he is almost chasing her. This gives us an insight to what their relationship might be like. Another pan...

Film viewing practice Essay "Agent Carter"

When watching Marvel One shot- Agent Carter (2013) the first thing you may pick up on is the establishing shot of New York. It’s a beautiful skyline. If you are familiar with New York today, you may notice that it is not the same skyline you’d encounter if you looked now. This is to subconsciously tell you that the time setting is not current.   The second thing you may notice is the costuming.   That is the second thing that immediately tells you it was set in a different era than what were in. The costuming is much more formal that what we are used to. Now a days those who work at precincts do not wear suits. This would be considered a part of the mise-en-scene. When Peggy is being asked to do a task by the misogynistic man, it immediacy cuts to paperwork ready and waiting in her desk. I suppose this was for comedic effect, but also to set the tone of her environment at the time. You also may notice that when Peggy is looking at her “dead” love interest the music beco...

Mise- en- scene

Image
Staging- In this shot Beck is focused on. The camera switches back and forth between beck and Jade, emphasizing the tension between them. It is now becoming more apparent that the song Jade is singing is about Jade. It is also important to note the fact that no one else is around Beck and even the background dancers behind Jade are somewhat blurred. You will also notice that in other shots during the scene, the rest of the main characters are grouped together. This symbolizes that they are not apart of this main storyline. Lighting- In this scene, I tried to capture the lighting. You may notice the green led lights. It's currently night in this scene, and the led lights help create a fun "party" atmosphere. Through out this scene the lights change from different colors. You will notice as the scene goes on, and may even notice in the picture below that the main light will start to focus on Jade it self. Again emphasizing the intensity of this scene. At the start of the ...

5 Master edits with sound

Image
Music- I chose to add music to the contrast edit to further differentiate the two clips. In the first you get a serene peaceful emotion and in the second you get an intense scary emotion. Even though its the same subject in both clips you get two very different emotions because of the different back ground music Non- d iegetic  sound- I chose to add off screen sound effects to the parallelism clip for comedic purposes. Its supposed to symbolize what the audiences reaction might be to the two of us. It's supposed to be funny because even though we are both doing the same thing the audience only likes the dog hence the cheering and booing when it shows me. Direct sound- I chose to keep the direct sound for the symbolism clip. It was only because i couldn't really think of any sounds or background music that would fit this clip. Plus towards the end of the pom poms clip you can hear them ruffle which I think is nice. Voice over- I chose to do a voice over for my simultaneity cl...
